Kogi is a state in the central region of Nigeria. It is popularly called the Confluence State because of the confluence of River Niger and River Benue at its capital, Lokoja, which is the first administrative capital of modern–day Nigeria. The state was created on 27th August 1991. A recent projection of the population of Kogi stands at over 4, 8oo, 000.
Kogi is blessed with enormous natural and human resources. Agriculture is a key component of the state’s economy, with fishing in the riverine areas like Lokoja, Idah, e.t.c. Notable farm produce from the state include: coffee, cocoa, palm oil, groundnuts, maize, cassava, cashew, yam, rice and melon.
Kogi is also rich in mineral resources such as coal, limestone, iron, petroleum and tin. The State is home to the largest iron and steel industry in Nigeria known as Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited and one of the largest cement factories in Africa, the Obajana Cement Factory.
Kogi state is the hub of Transport in Nigeria as it connects the Federal Capital Territory with 22 Southern States. The state is endowed with a high intellectual capacity as it can boast of a professor in virtually every household and highly cerebral and quintessential professionals across the globe. Kogi also seats on massive tourism potentials.
Despite its creation about 32 years ago and the enormous human and natural resources, unfortunately these potentials are yet to be unlocked. It is worrisome, the spate of development and underdevelopment of kogi state in the last 32 years when compared with several other states that was created at this period. This has prompted the decision of Kogi young professionals to unite in the quest to harness the God given potentials of the state. Obviously, government cannot do this alone, all hands must be on deck and it is the collective responsibility of all kogi state young professionals across the globe to contribute our own quota towards repositioning Kogi State on the path of sustainable development.
